St.Elizabeth Girls' School | A Centre of Excellence for Girls Education

Hon. Sylvia Namabidde SSinabulya

Director.

St. Elizabeth Girls’ School, Mityana.

P. O. Box. 374 Mityana, Uganda

I conceived the idea of a Girls’ School for my community basing on my personal experience at one time as at student in a girls’ School, but also my experience as a parent in Gayaza High School and Wanyange Girls School where I educated my daughters that made me believe that Girls in Mityana and the surrounding areas need a Girls’ only space where they can be supported to develop their full potential.

As a leader, I also saw lots of inequalities in the education system in the country. Students from poor households – mostly in rural areas missed out on quality education such as that received by their counterparts from well to do families – especially those found in urban areas. In 2010 I embarked on a mission to turn my great passion for gender equality and equity into a solid project – building a Girls’ Secondary chool in my community to provide opportunities for girls in my community and the surrounding districts – as a testament that girls need a chance, that actually girls’ education is the cornerstone for community and national development. This project builds on my legacy while in Local Government and the National Parliament where I championed legislation to ensure girls access education and remain in school, and to ensure that barriers that stand in the way for the education of girls are eliminated.
